Artist In Residency - Denmark Arts
Role: Artist in Residency for one month with Denmark Arts, Western Australia
Fleassy Malay was awarded a one month residency from April to May 2026 in Denmark, Western Australia.
The residency required no public outcome but during the month Fleassy ran two workshops (Writing as a Reclamation of Self, and Writing the Self – Belonging and Defiance) t support the local creative community. To finish the residency they offered a performance of Spoken Word to a full house.
Fleassy’s aim for their month in WA was to work on their next poetry collection, work on their graphic novel, and have a complimentary practice of water colours. The residency was a huge success with them completeling the first draft of their poetry manuscript, and producing a series of 8 watercolours depicting local Denmark birds they had seen during their residency.
Another element to their time in Denmark was a commitment to connecting to the local creative community. During the four weeks they did two interviews for Denmark FM radio, modeled twice for the local Life Drawing group, and attended as an artist to sketch once. Attended a local writers group, authors talk, poetry circle, plain aire group, and multiple local musical events. They formed creative connections with multiple local artists with the intention of potentially exploring future collaborations.
